Primary focus is on the impact on school leaders of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The bulk of the writing involves summarizing and analyzing recent case law and decisions from the U.S. Education Department's Office for Civil Rights, but the freelancer also would be called on to generate some original reporting by following pending legislation and writing “how to” stories on model programs or approaches to school-based policy and training. The position also entails quarterly updates to an existing book; the updates largely involve incorporating the recent decisions into the text of the book, although complete rewrites of certain sections may be required on occasion. Qualifications Applicants should have a legal or journalism background. In addition, they must be able to demonstrate strong writing, editing, reporting and proofreading skills, as well as an ability to meet deadlines and willingness to work with in-house editorial and production staff.
